Differential expression of genes identified from Poncirus trifoliata tissue inoculated with CTV through EST analysis and in silico hybridization Genet. Mol. Biol.
Cristofani-Yaly,Mariângela; Berger,Irving J.; Targon,Maria Luisa P.N.; Takita,Marco A.; Dorta,Sílvia de O.; Freitas-Astúa,Juliana; Souza,Alessandra A. de; Boscariol-Camargo,Raquel L.; Reis,Marcelo S.; Machado,Marcos A..
Citrus is the most important fruit crop in Brazil and Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) is considered one of the most important pathogens of citrus. Most citrus species and varieties are susceptible to CTV infection. However, Poncirus trifoliata, a close relative of citrus, is resistant to the virus. In order to better understand the responses of citrus plants to the infection of CTV, we constructed expressed sequence tag (EST) libraries with tissues collected from Poncirus trifoliata plants, inoculated or not with Citrus tristeza virus at 90 days after inoculation, grafted on Rangpur lime rootstocks. We generated 17,867 sequence tags from Poncirus trifoliata inoculated (8,926 reads) and not (8,941 reads) with a severe CTV isolate. A total of 2,782 TCs...

Disease resistance in sugarcane – An overview Sci. Agrar.Paran. / SAP
Sundar, A. Ramesh; Ashwin, N.M.R.; Barnabas, E. Leonard; Malathi, P.; Viswanathan, R..
Sugarcane is one of the important commercial crops cultivated world-wide both under tropical and sub-tropical conditions. The crop gains economic importance by virtue of its industrial potential in terms of products like crystal white sugar, bagasse, pressmud, power etc. Among the various production constraints of the crop, diseases are seen as a major threat for sustaining the productivity of sugarcane. Conventional Breeding is a lengthy process and it involves almost more than 10 years for the release of a commercial variety. Many varieties with superior agronomical traits have succumbed to diseases like red rot and smut during the course of cultivation, which hitherto at the time of release were rated to be resistant. The breakdown of disease resistance...

Enhancing resistance to Vibrio aestuarianus in Crassostrea gigas by selection ArchiMer
Dégremont, Lionel; Azéma, Patrick; Maurouard, Elise; Travers, Marie-agnes.
Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) and Vibrio aestuarianus are the two main pathogens affecting the production of French oyster (Crassostrea gigas). The absence of genetic correlation between the two diseases is promising for the development of stocks with dual resistance. Using unselected and selected oysters concerning enhanced resistance to OsHV-1 infection, we investigated the first generation of mass selection and the response to selection to increase the resistance to V. aestuarianus for two stocks. For each stock, four groups were produced in June 2013 using either parents unchallenged with the bacteria or counterparts that survived experimental infections by the bacteria. Thus, groups were unselected oysters for both pathogens, selected for either the...

Evaluation of soybean breeding lineages to new sources of root-knot nematode resistance Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Hamawaki,Osvaldo Toshiyuki; Hamawaki,Raphael Lemes; Nogueira,Ana Paula Oliveira; Glasenapp,Jacqueline Siqueira; Hamawaki,Cristiane Divina Lemes; Silva,Carolina Oliveira da.
ABSTRACT In Brazil, as the soybean crop expands the losses caused by nematodes as well as its incidence in producing areas have increased. Therefore, this work aimed to develop a non-genetically modified soybean which combines desirable traits as the root-knot nematode resistance, early-maturity, high seed yielding, and high oil and protein contents. Consequently, seeds (F2) derived from the double-crossing between (Guarani x Sambaiba) x (M Soy 6101 x Conquista) were bulked to grow the F3 generation. Following generations were advanced by the SSD method of breeding until F6. Thus, plants showing superior characteristics were planted separately to perform progeny tests and then advanced breeding lines were thoroughly tested and compared to standards in...

Evidence of herpesvirus (OsHV-1) resistance in juvenile Crassostrea gigas selected for high resistance to the summer mortality phenomenon ArchiMer
Degremont, Lionel.
During the MOREST project (2001–2006), oyster summer mortality was extensively investigated in Crassostrea gigas in France. However, significant increases in magnitude and geographic distribution of summer mortality episodes have been reported since 2008. This paper investigates the response to selection for survival, which was successfully performed between 2001 and 2003, in this new context. It also examines the relationship between the mortality and the three pathogens Vibrio aestuarianus, V. splendidus and the Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1). Three batches of juvenile (6-month-old) Crassostrea gigas were produced in February 2009 and tested in the field in the Marennes-Oléron Bay during summer (August and September) 2009: one control batch, one batch...

Experiences on importance of diet for shrimp postlarval quality OMA
Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This paper gives an overview of own experiences with respect to the impact of dietary conditions on the quality of postlarval penaeid shirmp. Direct nutrient-specific effects are documented for highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA), phosphatidyl choline (PC) and ascorbic acid (AA). Specific immunostimulants may also contribute to an improved stress resistance of the shrimp fry. Last, but not least, some emphasis is placed on the role of the microflora during the hatchery rearing, the possible reduction of bacteria in the live food adminstered, and the use of probionts through the diet.

Genetic and resistance stability to Black Sigatoka disease during micropopagation of Musa CIEN BTA-03 somaclonal variant Phyton
Giménez,C; de García,E; Haddad,O.
Evaluation of clonal micropropagation and phenotype stability of elite somaclones are critical steps for development of new varieties. In the present work somaclon variant CIEN BTA-03 (resistant to Black Sigatoka), obtained through in vitro process from cultivar Williams (susceptible to Black Sigatoka), was micropropagated via apical shoot culture for five multiplication cycles in 0.5 mg/l of benzyl-aminopurine (BA). To verify the genetic stability of the progeny of this elite material, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used. A total of 5,292 monomorphic bands were obtained from the amplification of fifty six DNA samples (extracted from vitroplants randomly selected) with 10 different primer combinations. Non-polymorphic RAPD bands were...
